| 27th March 2008 - Golfaholics @ Stockport G.C. | ||||||
|
On a day when the weather forecast was inclement to say the least, 35 enthusiastic Golfaholics turned up to ply their trade at Stockport. Bacon baps and coffee was all they needed to raise their enthusiasm for what appeared to be a soaking. To everyone's surprise (except of course our local weather expert Dave Garrard) the weather slowly began to improve and by tee time 10.45am the breaks in the cloud had begun. What a super day it eventually turned with some guys even stripping down to their polo shirts. Stockport G.C. as usual can only be congratulated in their professional approach to visiting societies. Everything on time, the professional staff most courteous and the course up to it's usual challenging self. After match dinner provided the opportunity to announce the winners; Single stableford 7/8 handicap.
The next Golfaholics event is at Knutsford G.C. on 31st July. This club will only allow a limited field so book early to avoid disappointment. Report by Dave Muirhead |

Well what a contrast to 2006. No t-shirts this year, except for Pat Hayes! The coach left on time, but where were the two recent new additions to Council - the young blood of the Club? Fresh faced Chairman of Development developed a bladder problem and decided to give the Coach a miss. "I'm not getting on a coach with no lavatory and 48 booze merchants". Chairman of Handicaps and Competitions just wanted to avoid semi pro Larry McDonald who recently had his handicap "adjusted". So it was that Ant Milner and Paul Wilson drove down via Sat Nav and made it in good time for their 1st tee slot of 9:45am, despite Dave Muirhead's frantic phone call at 9:33am "Where are you ?!?! You're first off!!" They were also the first in with their relevant and reluctant partners, Tony “Turbo” Francis and chief raconteur Paul “Starsky” Townley. Whilst Paul wished Larry a Merry Christmas in the clubhouse the rest of the group were doing battle with the elements. Unfortunately it was a lost cause and one by one the boys came home early – except the debonair David Muirhead and Warrington's answer to Lee Trevino, Russel Tyler. It was left to semi pro caddy Richard Singleton to jump in a buggy & go and get them in. The chef came in early and once the meal was over the coach headed back to base. WE SHALL RETURN CONWY!! Dave and Russ have done very well to re-arrange the entire day at Northenden on Sunday 13th Jan – Same pairings and meal/prizes to follow. Until then...

| 28th September 2007 - De Vere Carden Park vs Northenden | ||||||
|
Team Northenden: D Beckett & P Coppard, N Hockenhull & B McHugh, A Milner & J Bagley, K Jones & P Buckley, N Bradley & I Brougham, A Fisher & G Culpan The Away leg of the annual match v De Vere Carden Park took place on Friday 28th September 2007 with NGC coming out overall winners and retaining the trophy - JUST! This was the third year of the match, which was organised by NGC's resident thespian Dave Beckett and Andy Roberts from Carden. The match is played over a home and away leg, with 6 pairings from each Club. Northenden arrived at Carden Park with a 4.5 – 1.5 lead from the first leg held at Northenden earlier in the year. For those that know Carden, we played the Cheshire course (the other course is the Nicklaus) and it's a good test of golf and a super track – it wasn't going to be easy, even with a 3 point lead. And so it proved to be! Captain Beckett led the way with Peter Coppard by his side. And they never looked back. A truly mesmeric performance resulting in an 8 & 6 win and the first full point was on the board for Northenden – it was also the last!! One by one the remaining team walked in with heads down as Captain Beckett recorded the results back at base. It wasn't pretty. One by one the NGC boys were taking hits. It all came down to the last match involving Graham Culpan and Alistair Fisher. But where were they?? Al had turned up to play sporting a sporting injury (rugby!) and had had a quick "How to play when you're body doesn't" from Dr Ant Milner on the range beforehand. It was now getting dark as the troops looked out over the 18th green, which was only lit by the clubhouse lights. And then..from the trees some 350 yds away up on the hill we saw movement – it was them heading for the 18th tee. And Alistair was still upright. NGC just needed half a point to draw the match overall and retain the Trophy. Graham & Alistair approached the green – we couldn't confirm it was them until we recognised Graham's determined gait and Alistair's practice routine – but it was quite simple. A par 4 will do it. Graham duly obliged with a very safe two putt and received a big pat on the back from Capt Beckett and the rest of the team, as did Alistair for a truly outstanding effort under the circumstances. The hospitality awarded to Northenden was warm and friendly and the food both before and after the match was plentiful and tasty. Although victory always does taste good!!! As the Players get used to each others Course, these matches are going to get very interesting indeed...

| 9th September 2007 - Yorkshire (Selby G.C) v Lancashire (Northenden G.C) | ||||||
|
Everyone arrived at NGC for 9:45 to meet the coach...or did they? The Irish duo of Ernie Power and Larry McDonald turned up cock-a-hoot having posted 69 and 68 nett scores the day before. Brian Slipper flew in from Tenerife and even Pat Hayes turned up having been AWOL most of the season. Singy left the girls to look after the bar and kitchen, and even Ant Milner had an early night Saturday, unlike Garry Aspinall who thankfully got a lift to the club! Ex-Captain Dave Muirhead wanted everyone off the coach so we could have a team photo but we were one person short. Team Capt Ali McNab was on the phone speaking to the mystery no show – it was Pat McGlade. “Pat we’re leaving in 2 minutes...see you there mate!”. Pat made it, eventually, to the relief of Captain McNab and the NGC team. On arrival in Yorkshire, NGC were warmly greeted by Woody and Jack in the car park. Handshakes all round and straight to the bar and snooker room. Slip, Paul Connor and Andy Peacock were very thirsty after the journey and by the time the buffet had arrived they were still at the bar. In fact they were still at the bar when the team Captains were teeing off 2 hours later!! Ian Brougham couldn't wait for the catering staff to finish laying out the food and nipped in for a handful of pork pies for himself and Nev. Ant Milner and Ian McNab expertly manoeuvred themselves to the table next to the food (surprise surprise) to ensure a place at the front of the queue, but were still beaten by the old guard led admirably by Albert O'Rourke and Mike Earley. There was plenty to go round though and once the feast was over the boys headed out to the excellent practice facilities at Selby to loosen up, except Slip, Paul and Andy!! The Course was in excellent condition and the greens were an absolute pleasure to putt on (except for Nev and Ian who couldn't read them!!). Probably the best greens some of the team had played on for a long while and a real taster of what NGC members can enjoy on their USGA greens in the coming years. Everybody enjoyed the golf and the banter between the two teams was at its usual best and bets were won and lost all over the place. Selby won this time, unfortunately, and it was NGC who went home with the famous Clog!! We enjoyed a lovely meal and drinks prior to the speeches by NGC Organiser Ali McNab and Selby's statesman Jack Gorbutt, who announced he was retiring along with Ali from organising the trips, which all involved were sad to see but the mantle must now be passed on. Once the speeches were out of the way it was over to Woody (that's him pictured “feathering” a 4 iron from a small bush). He said he didn't really what to say much but 30 hilarious mins later he was still telling us all about his “Power Game” and deft touch around the green.
Cammie Stewart posed for a photo he may regret (see Candid Cameron) and Monty didn't bring his red rose but his son Anthony did, and he received many compliments for the quality of the flower – fresh from outside the Shell garage in Northenden!! It was great for all who went, to be involved in Selby's Centenary Year, and we wish the club and all its members all the very best – except when we play again in 2008!! Long may the trips continue and a special thanks to Ali and Jack for all their efforts over the years. |

The Northenden coach was on time and the sun was out – but what awaited the Northenden Team on the coast at Conwy G.C? First of all we had to get there and things weren't helped by the fact the A55 was blocked due to an accident. A detour through Rhyl was required but we made it just in time for bacon rolls and coffee. There was a scrum to reserve trolleys, and after 10 mins all that was left were three very poor looking devices. One had no handle, one had no wheels and one was bent. Those forward thinking among the group decided to reserve shower towels too, and they were hastily stuffed into holdalls prior to play...a bit cheeky but needs must on away days. The weather at Conway was quite unbelievable for the time of year (remember it was December!!) and some of the hardier souls donned t-shirts. The winners of the Formby Scroll for 2006 were Russ “Leftie” Tyler and Chris Spencer. We can’t remember the score but nobody cares as Russ always wins stuff and he lives in Warrington!! No but seriously well done Russ and Chris and we're all looking forward to the trip on Dec 27th 2007, when a record number of NGC members will be heading west to do battle once again.
