Alex looks to be a trend setter!

 

NORTHENDEN Golf Club’s assistant professional Alex Mattison is looking to set a new trend at golf clubs as he has volunteered to become his club’s junior organiser.

 

Having come through the junior ranks Alex has a great affinity for the role and feels that other assistant professionals could also become involved in the same way.

 

Alex said: “Many clubs are struggling to find junior organisers for a variety of reasons and already being involved in running regular junior lessons each week

 

“I felt that I had plenty to offer in this role and could bring continuity to a vital part of golf club life and having greatly enjoyed my time as a junior at Northenden I could add a lot to the role as I have a natural affinity to junior golf.

 

“The links with juniors and the coaching and other organisation involved will also enhance my PGA training adding valuable hands-on experience.

 

“I have great support from the captain Ian Hynes who was himself a junior organiser at the club and my first aim is to get local boys and girls involved.

 

“I have already contacted several local junior schools to set up coaching sessions in Tri Golf and have received an encouraging response and I am looking to get help from the Golf Foundation and hopefully get the coveted Golf Mark award for Northenden.

Alex, 23, joined Northenden at the age of six and the bulk of his family are members of the club.

 

Alex, who had a final handicap of three before joining the PGA course, was Junior Captain of the club and since he left the junior ranks he has been continuing his education with a career in golf a real objective for him.

 

Alex studied sports technology and golf operations at Myerscough College in Central Lancashire before continuing his education with an internship at Dantuskie Island in the golfing paradise of South Carolina.

 

On his return to England he worked in Cambridge for Titleist until grabbing the opportunity to return to his golfing roots.

 

Alex said: “It’s a dream come true for me to take up this role at Northenden under the expert eye of professional Grant Doyle who is a great mentor having achieved very high marks when passing his PGA examinations a few years ago.”
